Background

Franeker attracts increasingly more new visitors. And rightly so! The Eleven Cities city boasts a beautiful old city centre with historic buildings with a rich academic history. Which you can still experience daily, among other places, in the Royal Eise Eisinga Planetarium. But the Academy of Franeker has not existed since 1811 when Napoleon closed the University of Friesland. However, since 5 October 2017, the Academy of Franeker has been re-established.

Since then, Franeker has been reinvigorating itself and letting its rich and inspiring history speak. Through the activities of the Academy of Franeker, a series of 11 'Academic stories' with accompanying photographs and many other 'dedicated and ingenious' initiatives. At the moment, the Planetarium is in line to become a UNESCO World Heritage site. From summer 2021 onwards, Franeker brings stories from the walls to life at 41 locations, telling the rich history through various characters.

The stories are narrated in Dutch or in Franekers. Stories where the academy is never far away…
