Greidhoeke

This wide-open landscape is one to see, smell and hear. Preferably by bike, on foot or by boat. Here you experience the four seasons to the full. In spring, enjoy the floral splendour and the birds tumbling over one another in the nature reserves (Skrok, Skrins and Leonser Polder). The languid summer, when you can explore the area by boat or bike, but also during the mysterious autumn when the stately head-neck-body farmhouses rise out of the low-lying mist, and in winter the Greidhoeke is ideally suited for making magnificent skating tours.

After a lovely bike / walk / boat trip, it is pleasant to relax in one of the nostalgic inns, where you can enjoy Frisian hospitality and a surprisingly good meal. As the icing on the cake, the Frisian Elfsteden towns of Sneek, Bolsward and Franeker and the Frisian capital Leeuwarden are nearby! Where you can shop to your heart's content or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll along the canal-side houses of these towns.

The green heart of Friesland

Once, the Marne and the Middelsee flowed deep into Friesland as two (inland) seas. The area between Franeker, Sneek and Bolsward was affected daily by the ebb and flow of the tides. A precarious existence, so exposed to the open sea. But the Frisians were inventive and worked the fertile land, building small dykes and terps.

In the Greidhoeke, the landscape still clearly shows how earlier inhabitants tamed an ancient sea. The result: endless meadows. The land became suitable for dairy cattle, so the Frisian dairy industry emerged here. In Wommels, at the museum it Tsiispakhûs, you can discover the history of milk, cheese and butter from the Greidhoeke. Cultural history to savour!
